WOODY ALLEN UPSETS JEWISH LOBBY

WOODY ALLEN, opening the 55th Cannes Film Festival yesterday, rounded
on an American Jewish group which said that the event should be
boycotted in protest at the recent wave of anti-Semitism in France.
The veteran filmmaker accused the influential American Jewish
Congress of adopting the same kind of tactics used by the Nazis
against the Jews before the Second World War.

'Boycotts were exactly what the Germans were doing against the Jews,'
he told French radio.

Mr Allen, who is Jewish, said that newspaper advertisements placed by
the congress comparing comtemporary France with the Vichy regime that
collaborated with Hitler's Germany were 'ridiculous'. The congress
furiously denounced Mr Allen's criticism as 'outrageous'. the same
kind of tactics used by the Nazis against the Jews before the Second
World War.
