Tensions with India rising by the hour: Pakistani FM Via NY Transfer News * All the News That Doesn't Fit Tensions with India rising by the hour: Sattar ISLAMABAD, Dec 30 (AFP)--Tensions with India were rising by the hour as Pakistan learns of fresh troop movements ordered by New Delhi, foreign minister Abdul Sattar said on Sunday. Sattar said that in the past few days US president George W. Bush had urged India and Pakistan to exercise restraint as the nuclear-capable rivals massed forces and weapons along the border. "Our anxieties are mounting not only by the day but hours as we receive information about the movement of Indian forces on the border," he said. Sattar insisted that Pakistan had taken substantial steps towards cracking down on the militant groups whom India accuses of carrying out a bloody raid on its Parliament. Pakistan had frozen the assets of five extremist organisations and was now awaiting evidence from India before it prosecuted those believed responsible, he said. "At the moment, we are hearing accusations from across the border. We want actionable evidence so that we can begin judicial process. We are ready to move but you cannot proceed without any evidence," he said. Sattar said that he would attend the South Asian summit in Kathmandu starting Friday, and he hoped it would give an "opportunity for talks" with Indian officials. The foreign minister said that Pakistan was extremely alarmed at India's deployment of the bulk of its forces from their peacetime position to locations close to the border. The pace of the build-up gave out very worrying signals and Pakistan, he said, would have no alternative but to enhance its own presence. ================================================================= NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems Since 1985 - Information for the Rest of Us 339 Lafayette St., New York, NY 10012 http://www.blythe.org e-mail: nyt@blythe.org ================================================================= nytmid-12.31.01-06:41:03-8111
